Why did my professor stop me from discussing a controversial book in class?
In my political science class, we were supposed to discuss a book that has different views. I started to share my thoughts, but the professor quickly changed the subject. Later, she told me that some topics are too sensitive for the classroom. I was just trying to engage with the material. This book is part of the course reading list, so why can't we discuss it? It makes me think that real learning is being blocked. I want to understand all sides of an issue, not just the safe ones. How are we supposed to grow if we avoid hard conversations?

but that's exactly when discussion matters most.

Yeah, that line about when discussion matters most... I used to totally agree. Then I saw a good teacher nearly lose her job because one student felt "targeted" during a book talk. The school just sided with the complaint to avoid a lawsuit. Now she only assigns the safest books. It made me see the professor's fear as real, not just being difficult.

Maybe your professor is worried about breaking new campus speech rules. A lot of colleges have strict policies now about "hostile learning environments" for any topic involving race or gender. If that book touches those subjects, she might be afraid of a student complaint that could get her in real trouble with the dean. It turns the classroom into a legal minefield instead of a place for debate.
