My offset smoker temp swings were driving me crazy until this fix

Last month I was out in my backyard in Austin trying to hold 225 for a brisket and my cheap offset was bouncing from 190 to 280 every 10 minutes. I tried adjusting the airflow and adding more wood but nothing worked. Then an old pitmaster at Franklin's told me to pack a wet towel around the firebox door gap. It dropped my temp swings to like 15 degrees max. Has anyone else used a cheap trick like that to seal up a leaky smoker?

Wet towel trick is gold but have you tried a gasket kit? Those cheap offsets leak like a sieve everywhere not just the firebox. I used high temp rope gasket from Amazon on my lid and cooking chamber door and it turned my temp swings from a rollercoaster into a gentle wave. Might be worth layering that on top of the towel if you really want steady temps.

Another angle worth thinking about is that water pan placement inside the cooking chamber can act like a thermal battery. I threw a cheap disposable aluminum pan full of water on the cool side under the grates and it helped smooth out those wild swings by absorbing and releasing heat slower. That combo with some sealing tricks might get you closer to rock solid temps without dumping more cash into gaskets right away lol.
