Got permabanned from a Facebook woodworking group over a table saw question, so now I drive 40 minutes to ask a guy named Dale
Back in October I asked a simple question in a 60,000 member Facebook woodworking group about whether it was safe to rip a 2x4 on a jobsite saw without the riving knife, and within an hour a mod removed the post and messaged me that I was "promoting unsafe practices" and banned me for life. What really got me was that three guys in the comments had already answered me politely, one of them even said he'd done it for 20 years with no kickback, and the mod nuked all of that too. So these days I don't ask anything in groups at all, I drive 40 minutes out to a shop in Mesa where a retired cabinetmaker named Dale lets me stand there and watch him make the cut first before I try it. It's slower, I burn half a Saturday sometimes, but Dale tells me straight when I'm about to do something dumb instead of banning me for asking. I still read the groups for photos of other people's builds, I just never type a word. Curious if anyone else here gave up on a hobby group after a mod nuked a legit question, or did you find a different place to ask?
Not a mod ban but I quit a gardening group after a guy jumped down my throat for asking if it was too late to plant garlic. Started going to a little nursery down the road instead where the owner just tells me straight, no drama. Turns out a lot of those big groups are run by people who like being in charge more than they like the actual hobby. Having one person like Dale who will watch you and give real answers beats 60,000 strangers every time.
