I finally stopped guessing on hub bearing preload after an old timer at the Boise co-op set me straight
I was repacking the bearings on a 1990s Deore hub about 6 months ago and had the cones cranked way too tight because I thought any play meant it was loose. A retired shop guy watching me work asked if the wheel spun free, and when I said it felt a little stiff he said 'then you already know the answer.' How do you all explain preload to new mechanics who think tight equals safe?
