Dropped $380 on a hydraulic press from a guy in Tulsa, saved my elbow but almost wrecked my shop
I was hand hammering damascus billets for 6 months and my elbow was shot, so I drove to Tulsa and paid $380 for a used 20 ton press. First week I almost punched the ram through my anvil because I didn't shim the base plate right, but once I got it squared up my billet welding time went from 3 hours to 40 minutes. Anyone else make the switch to a press and did you have to beef up your floor first?
Did you pour a new slab or just bolt it to what was there? I put mine on a 6 inch pad because my old floor was cracked and the vibration was walking the whole thing toward my bench. Forty minutes versus three hours is no joke though, that switch changes your whole workflow. Just watch your dies, a 20 ton will mushroom cheap ones fast.
