Figured out you can use a ball peen hammer to punch starter holes in hot steel without a center punch

Been fighting with a dull center punch for years on horseshoes till I tried just tapping a ball peen on the edge while it was orange and it made a perfect divot every time, anyone else have a tool they use backwards?

Is it really that serious though? You can get a center punch for a few bucks, and it's not like they get dull that often unless you're doing something wrong. Maybe just sharpen what you have instead of making things harder than they need to be.

That "making things harder" logic is exactly why no one thinks to use a ball peen on hot steel in the first place.
