Overheard a Google engineer talking about AI bias at a coffee shop in Seattle

I was sitting near this guy at Starbucks downtown, and he was telling his friend how their training data for a new model had too much of a certain demographic, like 80% white male voices. It made me realize how easy it is to bake in biases without even knowing it. Has anyone else run into issues with their own datasets leaning one way?

Discovered the spray oil trick after burning garlic powder on everything for 3 months

I kept getting that bitter burnt taste on my fries and finally realized if I just spray the oil on the food instead of mixing it in the bowl, the garlic and paprika don't scorch into the basket and now everything comes out perfect, anyone else have a seasoning timing issue they fixed by accident?

I went with Python because everyone said it was easier for beginners, but now I'm stuck not being able to make anything that actually shows on a website. Has anyone else dealt with switching to JavaScript after starting with Python?

The 6 month transformation of a rental hallway carpet that blew my mind

I went back to a condo I installed carpet in 6 months ago and barely recognized the place. The owner had me put in a light beige nylon carpet that looked amazing on day one. When I walked in last week, that same carpet was almost black in the main traffic lane from the door to the kitchen. The weird thing was the edges near the walls still looked brand new, like a perfect line between clean and dirty. The owner said their kids and a golden retriever just run back and forth all day long. I swear I saw a grape smashed into the fibers near the staircase too. Has anyone else seen that dramatic of a change in just half a year, or was this just a bad choice for a busy house?

TIL a coworker spends $12 a week on groceries by meal prepping oatmeal and rice bowls

I was in the break room yesterday and this guy from accounting was eating his lunch. Just a bowl of rice, black beans, some frozen veggies, and hot sauce. I asked him about it and he said he spends like $12 a week total on food. I thought he was joking but he showed me his meal plan. He makes a big batch of oatmeal for breakfast every Sunday, then cooks a huge pot of rice and beans for lunches. Dinner is the same thing. I spend like $60 a week on random stuff from the store and still feel like I'm hungry all the time. Makes me wonder if I'm just buying too many snacks and extras. Has anyone tried living off like just two or three cheap staples for a week?

Saw a guy use a magic trowel at a job site in Denver and it changed my finish game

I was working a sidewalk pour last Tuesday over by the old courthouse and this older finisher pulls out this beat up trowel that looked like it had been through a war. He did his final passes with it and the surface came out glass smooth without any of the chatter marks I usually fight with. I asked him what kind of trowel it was and he just said it's a 36 inch magnesium with the edges worn down from years of use. So I grabbed an old trowel from my truck and spent an hour sanding the edges down with 80 grit paper. Next day I tried it on a garage apron and the finish was way better than anything I ever got with a brand new trowel. Has anyone else ever filed or sanded down their trowel edges to get that smooth float effect?

The way people put away cutting boards at my last gig drove me insane

Kept finding them stored wet and stacked flat on each other, so every morning I'd have to pry apart boards with visible mold spots. Has anyone else dealt with a kitchen where basic drying habits just don't stick?

Heard a customer arguing that sourdough isn't real bread and I almost lost it

Some guy at the bakery counter yesterday was dead serious telling his friend that sourdough is just "fermented batter" and doesn't count as bread. I was standing there holding a loaf of my own starter bread and had to bite my tongue so hard. Like buddy, I've been feeding this starter for 8 months straight through night shifts and weekend chaos. Has anyone else run into people who think their grandma's white sandwich loaf is the only "real" bread out there?

Got to talking with a retired elevator guy named Ray at a supply shop in Cleveland last month, and he swore my Fluke meter was overkill for checking relay contacts. He handed me a $15 analog meter and said "you'll hear the difference when a contact is dirty, not just see it." Has anyone else found that analog meters actually catch intermittent faults better than digital ones?

oh man the dry brick coir thing got me too. I bought a whole pack of those compacted bricks and stood there staring at it like "how is this supposed to be dirt." I ended up dumping it in a bucket with hot water and waiting forever. what worked for me was just using composted bark fines mixed with perlite for my seed starting. honestly it holds moisture better and doesn't get that weird dusty feeling coir can have if you dont soak it right. plus I get it from a local landscaping supply place for cheap and they actually compost it themselves so I feel less bad about the environmental angle than shipping coir from halfway across the world.

The boots comparison is spot on @king.kevin. I actually just read a study about how neoprene compression starts affecting buoyancy control around 500 hours, so by 1000 your whole kit feels broken in. It's like the suit finally stops fighting you and starts working with you. That makes the stiffness worth dealing with.

Just had to pick between an offset and a pellet smoker for my competition cookoff

Wait, you actually had to babysit a PELLET GRILL? I thought those things were supposed to be the easy button for smoking, just set it and forget it. @the_wesley what kind of garbage model did you have? My buddy got one last summer and it dumped a hopper of pellets on his deck in the middle of the night. Talk about a real wake up call. That toddler comparison is too accurate, I would have thrown mine in the pool after that.

Shoutout to that $50 I threw away on a 'memoir writing course'

Oh man, I've been there too but honestly, is getting past censorship really that complicated for a regular memoir? Like, most platforms just flag stuff for obvious rule breaking and you can usually work around it with a few edits. Your mileage may vary but I feel like the whole "banned blog" thing gets played up more than it needs to be by these course guys.
