Hot take: I quit quenching my knives in motor oil after a flare up in my shop last Tuesday
I was in my garage off 9th Street in Eugene finishing a 1084 hunter when I dunked the blade in used 10W-30 like I always did. The oil popped, caught the fumes, and a flame shot up two feet from the coffee can. I grabbed my welding glove and smothered it with a lid, then sat there shaking for a minute. Now I use Parks 50 in a proper quench tank and my edge hardness is more even anyway. Anyone else get scared straight into a real quench oil, or am I the last guy holding a flaming coffee can?
Stopped quenching in motor oil the second I saw flames lick the shop ceiling. That stuff fumes and catches way too easy, and no knife is worth burning your garage down over. Real quench oil costs more but it holds a steady heat and won't turn your blade into a torch.
