I laughed at the guy teaching pattern welding basics, then tried his method
Been forging 8 years and always thought pattern welding was just fancy Damascus hype. A dude at the county fair in Spokane offered a 40 dollar class and I almost walked past. He showed me how stacking 15 layers with mild steel and 1095 changes the whole game if you weld in a flux slurry. Turns out my old method was way too dry, leading to cold shuts I blamed on the steel. Spent three days after that class redoing a billet and it came out cleaner than anything I've made. Anyone else had a beginner trick that made their old habits look dumb?

Flux slurry is honestly the secret nobody talks about enough.
