Saw a 1800s forge at a farm museum in Ohio and the tuyere setup surprised me
Took the kids to a living history farm outside Dayton last month and they had the old shop set up with a side blast tuyere instead of the bottom blast I run. The clay lining on that thing was maybe 4 inches thick and someone clearly relined it a bunch of times, you could see the layers. Any of you ever run a side blast on purpose, or is it just a museum thing now?
Wait, 4 inches of clay lining?? That's insane, I can't even picture a tuyere needing that much mud packed around it. Were the layers stacked like tree rings or more just slapped on wherever it burned through?
