Check your airflow, that's usually what slows it down. Propping it up on a sheet of metal helps it breathe from underneath too.

Actually, propping a laptop on solid metal can trap heat. Metal is a great conductor, so it'll just soak up that warmth and hold it right under the chassis. You want something that lets air pass through, like a stand with open mesh or even little rubber feet.
