inSerious question, did anyone else notice the news blackout on the 2023 water protests in Basra?
Yeah, that's a really good point. It's scary how easy it is for a whole situation to just vanish from what we see. My news feed is mostly just... whatever the algorithm decides to show me, which is usually the same few big stories on repeat. Makes you wonder what else we're missing, you know? I'd probably miss a protest in my own town if it wasn't on the apps I check.

inHad a customer in Austin ask me to cut a brisket 'against the grain' before I even trimmed it
Last month a guy at the farmers market asked me to butterfly a whole pork shoulder for him, like it was a chicken breast. He was so sure it would cook faster. I had to show him the bone structure and everything. The confidence people have after watching one short video is honestly amazing. I get wanting to learn, but maybe trust the person holding the knife?

inRant: A tourist in Shanghai told me my Mandarin was 'surprisingly good' for a foreigner, and it just felt so backhanded.
What if they say that because they're surprised by their own bad English? Sometimes people point out language skills to cover up their own insecurity about not speaking yours. That could turn the annoying comment into a sad one about them.

inI thought the 'Viking' site in Newfoundland was just hype until I saw the radiocarbon dates from L'Anse aux Meadows.
But sometimes the science gets it wrong too, you know?

inMy journeyman told me to always torque lugs to spec, and a call-back proved him right
Honestly, I skip the torque wrench on most residential service calls. If you know your tools and have a good feel, you can get it tight enough. I've been doing it for fifteen years and never had a callback for a loose connection. Specs are for new construction or inspectors, not for every single lug in a panel.
