Stop calling scale a finished surface, a fella in Abilene showed me why it matters
I keep seeing folks on here say you can just brush off forge scale and move on, but that stuff is basically iron oxide sitting on top of good steel and it will flake off under anything that flexes. A smith in Abilene showed me a set of hinges he forged back in 2011 that had scale left on the faces, and every one of them had pits under it where moisture sat and ate in. Anyone else run into old work where the scale was never wire brushed off before it cooled?
Man that stinks for those hinges, all that work ruined by something so easy to fix. I've seen the same thing on old gate hardware, scale pops off and there's nothing but rot underneath. Good on that Abilene smith for keeping them around long enough to prove the point.
