That demo on hammer weight made me question 15 years of technique

An older smith at a shop outside Boise watched me work a billet and said my 3 pound cross peen was doing all the thinking for me. He handed me a 1.5 pound rounding hammer and told me to let the steel tell me when to strike. Has anyone else found that dropping down in weight actually speeds up your drawing out work, or was it just me about to fall for a fad?
