That jig I built backwards for 8 years finally clicked

I used to make these little bending jigs for scrollwork, always put the pin on the near side of the die. Last Tuesday a guy from a shop in Ohio watched me work and asked why I was fighting the grain direction. He showed me his setup with the pin on the far side and my next scroll came out clean on the first try. I've probably wasted a few hundred hours on that backwards method, has anyone else had a simple fix that made you feel dumb after?

Three years of hand tool joinery and I only just found out my marking gauge was set wrong because I was holding it upside down like a moron. I kept blaming the wood for being "cranky" when it was just me. Your Ohio guy is a saint, I bet he fixes people's marriages without knowing it. Somebody should make a support group for us backwards craftsmen, we'd all be showing up with our tools in the wrong hands.
