Why does nobody talk about how much coal smoke messes with your sense of smell
Last month I was working on a batch of 6 bottle openers in my garage shop in Boise and I kept messing up the temper colors because I couldn't smell if the oil quench was burning right. I've been smithing for 4 years now and it hit me that I've slowly lost the ability to tell when steel is at the right temp just by nose. My wife came out and said it smelled like a campfire in the house and I honestly couldn't tell anymore. So now I keep a little chart taped to my hood with the colors and I go by eye only. Anyone else notice their nose quit working after a while around the forge?
Funny thing is this happens with tons of stuff people just accept as normal. My grandpa worked at a body shop for 30 years and couldnt smell paint thinner at all by the end, and my buddy who roasts coffee every morning says he can barely pick up the smoke smell anymore either. Seems like the stuff we're around the most is exactly what our nose quits on first, which is kind of backwards when you think about it. The chart idea is smart though, eyes dont lie even when your nose does.
