Had a union steward set me straight about my grinder technique

Old timer named Mike from Local 74 in Gary pulled me aside last shift. He watched me running a 4.5 inch grinder with the guard off and said 'you're gonna lose a finger before you turn 30, kid.' Made me realize I was being an ass just to save 30 seconds per cut. Anybody else had an old head call them out on something dangerous?

Rough terrain crane vs all terrain on a muddy job site in Alabama last month

We had to set up in a field after three days of rain. The rough terrain with those big tires just sank right in after a few lifts. Company sent out an all terrain with the outriggers and it handled the soft ground way better. No spinning or digging in. Made me wonder if I should start pushing for all terrains more often on unstable sites even if the rental costs more. Anyone else been stuck in the mud with the wrong rig?

Honestly I thought spending $40 on a dotted notebook was a total scam

Tbh I used to grab whatever $5 composition book was on sale at Target and called it a bullet journal. I figured a notebook is a notebook, why pay more? But last month I caved and got a Leuchtturm1917 because my friend kept pushing me and I wanted her to stop. Ngl the pages are way smoother and the dots are actually consistent across the whole spread. My pen doesn't bleed through either which was a huge problem with the cheap ones. I've been using it for three weeks now and the difference in how neat my layouts look is kind of insane. Has anyone else switched from cheap notebooks to a nicer one and felt like it actually mattered?

Had to choose between Blum soft-close and plain hinges for a custom kitchen job in Pittsburgh

Ngl, I was torn on a recent install in Shadyside. The client wanted that premium feel but had a tight budget of $3,200 for hardware alone. I went with the Blumotion hinges on the upper cabinets and basic ones on the lowers to save a couple hundred bucks. Worked out fine so far, but has anyone else mixed hinge types on a single job and regretted it?

Finally got my neighbor to admit the chemtrails aren't real

Was at a block party in Austin last Saturday and old Mr. Henderson kept going on about the government spraying us. I pulled up the actual FAA flight logs on my phone right there and showed him those are just normal contrails from passenger jets. He just stared at his beer for like 10 seconds and said 'huh, guess I was wrong.' Has anyone else actually changed someone's mind in person like that?

Spent 6 hours training an AI model and it got worse than the free version

I spent all Saturday tweaking a custom model in RunPod for my blog content. Tested it on 15 sample posts and it came back with some weird formal tone I never asked for. The free version I was trying to beat actually writes better casual stuff lol. Has anyone else had their fine-tuning totally backfire on them like that?

TIL my 3-season tent hit 200 nights before I finally replaced it

I was flipping through my camping log book last night to plan a trip for next month. I added up all the nights from the last 5 years and that old REI tent I bought used for $80 had 208 nights on it. I always thought I'd swap it out after 100 nights but it just kept going. The zippers are sticky and one pole sleeve has a patch from duct tape but it still kept me dry in a storm last June up near Lake George. Finally ordered a new one this week but that number surprised me. Anyone else track how long their gear actually lasts before tossing it?

Warning: that 'banned books' list on social media had me questioning everything

I saw a post listing 'Maus' as banned in some schools and thought it was just people being dramatic. Then I checked the American Library Association's 2023 report and it was actually the 9th most challenged book that year with 28 formal complaints. Has anyone else caught fake warnings mixing with real bans?

Unpopular opinion: feedback on a piece I posted last week totally changed my shading approach

Someone commented that my shadows looked muddy and suggested I stop blending so much with soft brushes and start hard-edging my shadows. I tried it on my latest portrait and the contrast popped way more than I expected - has anyone else had a critique that forced them to completely rebuild their workflow?
