One guy at a board game cafe kept changing rules mid-game and I still think about it
I was playing a game of Settlers of Catan at a local cafe downtown about 6 months ago. This guy in his 40s joined our table and every time someone tried to trade with him, he‘d say 'well actually the rules say you can only trade on your turn' and then later he traded on someone else’s turn. Then he argued that the robber doesn‘t block resource production if you have a knight card. I looked it up on my phone later and he was wrong about that too. Has anyone else met a player like this who just makes up their own rules?

Imagine being that guy... maybe he was just trying to keep the game interesting for himself since Catan can get pretty boring after a few rounds. I've seen people tweak rules to speed things up or stop someone from running away with the game, and honestly a little house rule chaos can make it more fun for everyone. If he was wrong about the knight card that's one thing, but changing a trade rule mid-game could just be him trying to keep the table from getting too salty or stale. It's not like he was cheating for himself, more like he was trying to shake things up a bit.
