That $120 expansion box turned out to be a trap
Picked up a big box expansion for a game I already loved, figured more content equals more fun. Took it to game night last Friday and it just made the whole thing drag, the new mechanics were clunky and nobody wanted to deal with the extra setup time. We ended up ditching it halfway and playing the base game with the old rules. That thing is now sitting on my shelf mocking me, and I'm pretty sure I can't sell it for even half what I paid. Anyone else bought a hyped expansion that killed the vibe instead of improving it?

The base game is always the most balanced version. Every expansion I've bought adds some cool stuff but breaks the core loop somewhere else. My rule now is I wait until the game gets boring with the base set, and even then I only grab an expansion if I've played it with someone else first. That $120 is a tough lesson, but group play is where expansions either shine or fall apart. If it's really dead weight, try trading it on a local board game swap group instead of putting it online, you might get something usable back.
