I spent 11 months torquing tube sheet bolts in the wrong sequence and a guy from Local 146 caught it in 10 seconds
I always figured as long as I hit the final torque value, the order did not matter much. Last Tuesday I was on a heat exchanger in Edmonton and an older hand named Dale watched me run a pattern I had used on every job since I turned out. He asked who taught me that and when I said my first journeyman, he just shook his head and drew the star pattern on my glove with a soapstone. Turns out I was loading one side of the gasket unevenly the whole time, which is why we kept chasing small leaks on startup at three other sites. I rechecked two jobs from last winter and both had the same uneven crush marks on the ring. How many of you were taught a torque pattern, and did anyone actually explain why it has to run that way instead of just handing you the spec book?
