Overheard a fitter say he preheats his rods on a manifold, tried it out

I was on a shutdown at a chemical plant outside Baton Rouge last month and this old fitter mentioned he keeps his 7018s on a heated manifold at 250 degrees instead of a rod oven. I gave it a shot on a pressure vessel repair and the arc was way smoother, less spatter too. Anyone else run rods off a manifold or is that asking for moisture trouble?
