How a librarian in Tucson fixed our book club's biggest argument

We had this ongoing debate in my book club about whether to read fiction or non-fiction each month. People were getting REALLY heated over it. Then I was at the Joel D. Valdez Library in Tucson and a librarian overheard me complaining. She said just alternate every other month and let people vote on the genre 3 months ahead. We tried it at our last 2 meetings and nobody has complained since. Has anyone else found a system that stops the genre wars in your group?

My book club in Sacramento had the same problem. We started doing six months of fiction, then six months of non-fiction, and everyone picks one book from each half. That way nobody feels stuck with a genre they don't like for too long.

Wow, honestly this is such a classic example of people forgetting that compromise isn't about winning. It's like how my friend group argued over pizza toppings for years until someone just said "half and half" and we all realized we'd been idiots. Sometimes the simplest fix is right there, you just have to stop being stubborn long enough to see it.
