I brought a slow-burn sci-fi pick and half the club walked out angry

Last Tuesday I chose 'The Light Brigade' for our Cincinnati chapter and figured the war teleportation stuff would be a safe bet. Instead, two members stormed off saying the timeline jumps were 'lazy writing' and one guy slammed the door so hard the coffee cups rattled. I learned that our group splits hard on nonlinear stories, so now I'm checking with the four loudest members before I even pitch a nominee. Anyone else had a pick that turned a normally chill meeting into a full-on courtroom?

Whoa, that sounds rough. I gotta say though, I read that book and the timeline jumps are the whole point. It's not lazy, it's showing how the war messes with your head. Calling it lazy is like saying a puzzle is broken because you have to work for the picture. Maybe the club just wants easy reads, but I'd have been defending that book to the door slammer. Seems like a shame to let a few loud people pick everything now.
