My book club argued for 45 minutes about whether the lighthouse keeper was a ghost, and then someone read page 212 out loud
We meet at a cafe in Portland every other Tuesday and last week we did The Lamplighters, which nobody could agree on at all. Dana swore the keeper was dead the whole time, Marcus said that reading ruins the book, and our quietest member, Priya, just flipped to page 212 and read one line where he eats toast and complains about the damp. Total silence for like ten seconds, then everyone started talking at once. So now I want to know, do you all treat one line as proof, or is that cheating in a book club?
Page 212 isn't cheating, that's just close reading. One small detail can change how you see the whole book, and the toast line actually matters because ghosts don't eat. Waking up and complaining about damp is a body thing, so either he's alive or the book is messing with us on purpose. My club did something like this with a different book and the quiet person ended up being right, so maybe let Priya talk more.
