Our book club argued for 2 hours over whether the main character was a hero or a villain in that mystery novel set in Detroit
I came into it thinking she was clearly the bad guy, but after hearing the other side's points about her abusive past and limited choices, I actually changed my vote by the end of the meeting - has anyone else had a debate flip their whole opinion on a character?

Went into a similar debate about the detective in that Chicago thriller series thinking she was the hero. But someone laid out how she kept bending rules and destroying evidence to protect her informants, and that made me realize she was operating way more in the gray area than I wanted to admit. Changed my whole read on the character by the end of the night.

Bought the whole first season on a whim because everyone said she was this tough but fair cop. Then you watch her get a guy killed because she tipped off his criminal boss about the raid first. And the show acts like that was just a tough call she had to make. Got into an argument about it too, finally realized her loyalty was always to her own system of justice, not the actual law. Made me appreciate the writing more honestly, even if I can't root for her the same way.
