Our club picked a 900 page book and half the group quit by chapter 4, so I changed how we vote
Last month our book club in Sacramento voted on the next pick and went with a 900 page doorstop. By chapter 4, six of our eleven members had dropped out. One guy named Rob flat out messaged the group chat saying he wasn't reading past page 100 and he'd see us in April. I was the one who pushed for that book, so the silence in the room at our next meetup felt personal. What I did was simple. I made a rule that every pick has to come with a page count and a two sentence pitch before we vote. If the pitch can't sell it, it doesn't go on the list. That one change brought four people back for the next round, and we got through a 320 page novel in three weeks with about 80 percent attendance. I don't think page count should decide everything, but ignoring it clearly cost us half our group. Has anyone else had a club nearly fall apart over one long pick, and how did you pull people back in?
