Our club split over whether annotation counts as reading

Last month at the Mill Street library branch, we had a 14 person vote on banning margin notes during discussion, and it got heated fast. One member said annotations were 'just doodles with extra steps', but three of us argued it's how we actually engage with the text. Three years ago we couldn't even agree on a meeting time, so now we're fighting about pencils and highlighters. Has anyone else's club gone down this rabbit hole, or are we just weird?
