That book club argument about the unreliable narrator got way too personal
Last tuesday at the Mill Creek library, I said the narrator in our latest pick was just poorly written and a member started crying and accused me of not understanding trauma. Has anyone else had a book club debate turn into a full on emotional meltdown?

Told my group to stick to the book, not the person, and it calmed things down.

Valsullivan's advice to keep it about the book is the smartest thing I've heard on this. I remember reading in a writing column once that when a reader gets that defensive about a fictional character, they're usually projecting their own stuff onto the story. @valsullivan's rule would have saved everyone a lot of awkward silence.
