Hit 200 jobs this month and it caught me off guard

I've been running my own cabinet shop out of my garage for about 3 years now. Last month I finished my 200th job, some custom pantry unit for a lady in Oak Park. I didn't even realize I was that close until I counted back through my receipts. Has anyone else had a milestone like that just sneak up on them?

Went to a con in Cleveland and it totally flipped how I read comics

I used to just skim through issues looking at the art, skipping big blocks of text. Then at this booth a guy named Mike who drew for some indie press handed me his book and said 'try reading it out loud in a whisper.' I did that for like 3 issues of his series and suddenly I caught all these little character moments and jokes I woulda missed. Now I slow down and actually read every word bubble, even on stuff I thought I knew. Has anyone else had a weird trick that changed how you experience a comic?

That Tuesday shift in Kansas City changed my mind about digital crimpers

I used to think digital crimpers were overpriced junk. Then last month I had a gig rewiring a 737NG that had a ton of D-sub connectors. My old manual tool kept slipping and I crushed three pins in a row. A senior tech let me borrow his Daniels digital crimper and I finished the whole panel in under an hour without a single bad pin. Has anyone else made the switch and seen their rejection rate drop?

Saw how they do CAD now at the old firm I used to work at

Stopped by my old drafting job last Tuesday to pick up a reference check. The new guys are all using some cloud-based software with AI auto-dimensioning. Back in my day we had to manually place every single dim line with a keyboard shortcut. Felt like a dinosaur watching them work. Anyone else feel like the software is doing half the thinking now?

Remember when memes got banned for being 'rude' instead of political? Feels different now.

Back around 2015, I posted a meme making fun of a bad movie and it got taken down for being 'harassing' or whatever. Now I see memes calling politicians straight up crooks and they stay up for weeks before anything happens. It's like the rule book got thrown out and rewritten based on who's mad that day. What changed exactly, and why does it feel like we went from protecting feelings to picking sides?

Was dead set against hiring a social media manager for my shop until I saw the numbers

I fought paying someone $500 a month for 6 months, but after my neighbor's bakery started pulling in 30% more foot traffic from Instagram alone, I finally caved. First month in and my Saturday sales jumped by $1,200 - anyone else stubborn about outsourcing this stuff?

Spent three hours searching for a moose that wasn't even there

Last Tuesday I was driving home from a job near Palmer and saw what I thought was a huge bull moose bedded down just off the Glenn Highway. I pulled over, grabbed my binoculars, and spent a good 45 minutes trying to spot it again through the alders. Texted my buddy who hunts that area to come help me glass it, he showed up and we both stared at the same spot for another hour. Finally he laughed and pointed out it was just a weirdly shaped black spruce stump with some dead branches sticking up like antlers. We must have looked like total idiots to every car that passed. I felt pretty dumb but honestly it was a nice evening out anyway. Has anyone else had a moose sighting turn out to be a tree or rock?

Just found out a local paper in Brazil got shut down for reporting on river pollution in 2022

I was digging through some old links about water contamination and stumbled on this story from a small town in Minas Gerais. The paper had been running a series about how a nearby mining operation was dumping waste into the Rio das Velhas. Then suddenly their website went dark and the editor told a journalist friend that they got threatened with legal fees they couldn't pay. I tried to pull up the articles through archive sites but most were scrubbed even from cache. It took me reaching out to a university professor there to get a PDF of one piece. Makes me wonder how many other local outlets just vanish quietly without anyone outside noticing. Anyone else ever tried tracking down a buried story from a small town like that?

Had to pick between linen thread and a synthetic core for a restoration job

I was rebinding a 1920s novel last month in Austin and had to choose between traditional linen thread and a modern synthetic core for the signatures. I went with linen because I figured it matched the age better, but now the spine is already showing some stiffness. Has anyone else run into issues with linen thread on older paper?

Hit 200,000 feet of wire pulled this week and my forearms are screaming

I just realized that's basically 38 miles of running wire through conduit in the last 5 years and it kinda blew my mind, has anyone else ever tracked how much wire they've pulled over a career?
