Took me 3 months to figure out why our book club kept dying mid-discussion
Honestly, we kept picking these dense literary novels and every meeting turned into 20 minutes of awkward silence before someone confessed they didn't finish it. I finally tracked our attendance and realized we lost about 4 regulars every time we chose something over 400 pages or written before 1950. Switched to a mix of modern thrillers and short story collections for two months and suddenly people actually argued about plot holes instead of admitting they skimmed. Has anyone else found that the book itself matters way less than setting a page count limit for the group?
Losing 4 regulars every time you picked a long book is wild. That is not a small drop, that is basically half a book club walking out the door. I can't believe nobody said anything sooner though, like after the second or third meeting of dead silence someone had to notice the pattern. The 400 page thing makes sense but the pre-1950 part is what gets me, was it really the age of the book or just that old books are usually slower to get through? Either way it sounds like you cracked the code by watching the numbers instead of just blaming people for not reading.
