Tried a coin flip to pick our next book and now half the club won't talk to me
I put 8 titles in a hat at our Tuesday meetup in Denver and let a quarter decide, and it landed on the 600 page one nobody wanted. Now I'm wondering if I should just go back to a plain vote or if there's a better way to break a tie, how do you all settle it?
Been there, man. What finally worked for our group was a two step thing: everyone ranks their top three picks, then you add up the points, and if there's still a tie after that, the person who suggested the tied books has to pitch them for two minutes before another quick vote. Takes maybe ten extra minutes but nobody feels like a coin robbed them. The hat thing feels fair in the moment but people get mad at the randomness, not at you, so ditch the quarter.
