Can we talk about how nobody wants to admit modern PVA dries too fast for long stitch jobs
I have been binding 200 page journals with PVA for 3 years and switched to wheat paste with a bit of PVA mixed in about 4 months ago after watching a restorer in Denver work, and my spines stopped cracking at the hinge almost overnight.
Plenty of binders run straight PVA on 300 plus page books and the spines hold fine for decades, so maybe the real problem is how it's being used and not the glue itself. Wheat paste is great but it dries slow and soft, and you give up a lot of strength, which is why most shops still reach for PVA on the spine. If your hinges were cracking that fast, I would look at grain direction and how tight you're pressing before blaming the glue.
