DIY book press from two cutting boards and c-clamps, wish I did this sooner
My 500 page dictionary rebind kept warping the spine until I stacked my boards with 4 clamps and left it overnight, so has anyone else used kitchen stuff for pressing or should I just buy a real press?

Warping is usually a moisture issue, not just a pressure one. The cutting board trick works great, but pine boards can pull moisture out of the pages unevenly. Try wrapping the book in wax paper between the boards next time, it keeps the humidity even across the spine. Also, flip the whole stack over halfway through pressing so gravity doesnt settle all the moisture to one side. Kitchen stuff is fine for single books, but a real press just gives you even pressure without the daily tightening drama. Did you shim the spine gap with cardboard or just let the pages take the brunt of the clamps?
