I saved over $80 on a trip to Portland by using the city's bike share for a week instead of renting a car.

I got a $15 weekly pass for Biketown and rode everywhere, which was way cheaper than the $100+ I would have spent on a rental and parking (and honestly, more fun).

After I spent 45 minutes detailing my 12-point checklist for a deep clean, she just looked at me and said, 'Honestly, all that structure just slows you down and costs me more, I mean, I just want my floors to shine.'

Had to match a 100-year-old mortar color on a chimney repair

The homeowner wanted it perfect, but the old mix had this weird pinkish tint from sand with iron flecks. After three failed batches, I got desperate and threw in a handful of brick dust from the cleanup pile. Mixed it in dry before adding water, about a cup for a half bag of mix. It actually worked, gave it that exact faded, earthy tone. The client couldn't tell the new work from the original. Anyone ever use brick dust to color match mortar, or did I just get lucky?

Hot take: Everyone pushes the 100-mile mark, but hitting 50 solo was my real turning point.

It happened on the Ozark Highlands Trail, and it forced me to slow down and actually see the place. Has anyone else found a smaller number more meaningful than the big, popular goals?

My old way of cleaning pottery shards was a total joke

Honestly, for years I'd just use a toothbrush and water on finds from my volunteer dig at the Cahokia site, thinking it was fine. Tbh, a visiting archaeologist from the University of Illinois saw me last spring and gently pointed out I was probably scrubbing off residue that could be tested. Now I use a soft brush and only dry clean unless a conservator says otherwise. Has anyone else had a basic field method they were doing wrong for way too long?

Saw a whole protest get wiped from social media while I was in Berlin last week

I was visiting a friend in Berlin and we walked past a small climate protest near Alexanderplatz. Maybe 50 people with signs about a local pipeline project. I took a couple pictures and posted a short video to my usual social media account, nothing crazy. The next morning, my post was gone. No notice, no email, just vanished from my feed. My friend's post about the same protest was also removed, and when we searched for hashtags related to the event, we found nothing but old, unrelated content. It was like the whole thing never happened online, even though we physically saw it. This wasn't a huge global story, just a local gathering, but the complete digital erasure felt really intentional. Has anyone else noticed platforms quietly removing content about smaller, real-world protests in specific cities?

I always figured the first X-Men comic was a huge hit right away

I mean, I was reading an old interview with Stan Lee from a 1998 magazine I found at a garage sale, and he said X-Men #1 in 1963 actually sold really poorly. It was almost canceled after like 66 issues. Idk, I just assumed it was an instant classic. What other big series had a super rocky start?

Working on the old Port of Tacoma pier pilings last month

We were doing a standard inspection dive, about 25 feet down, and I noticed the concrete on the pilings was way more eaten away than the last survey from 2018 showed. It wasn't just general wear, it looked like something was actively boring into it in specific spots. We're talking holes the size of a fist in areas that were solid five years ago. My dive partner thought it might be a new type of gribble or shipworm moving into the area. Has anyone else run into accelerated piling damage in the Puget Sound recently, and what did you log it as?
