Rant: My glue kept seeping out the spine on a 400 page hardcover

I was binding a thick art book and the PVA kept oozing out no matter how thin I spread it. On a whim, I tried mixing in a tiny bit of methyl cellulose paste to thicken it up, maybe 10% by volume, and it held perfectly without any squeeze out. Has anyone else tried tweaking their glue mix for different book weights?

On a whim" is right... my last whim with glue ended with the book permanently stuck to the cat.

Remember my buddy who tried to fix his glasses with super glue... he wore them stuck to his forehead for a day.
