After my fern collection nearly died, I quit misting for good
I had five different ferns that I misted every day like everyone recommends. They started getting brown spots and mold. I stopped misting and just used a humidity tray instead. Now they're thriving, and I think misting does more harm than good.

The Royal Horticultural Society says not to mist most houseplants. They note it often causes leaf spots and mold, just like you found. I heard a botanist on a podcast say misting only raises humidity for a few minutes. Why even do it if the effect fades so fast? Your humidity tray works because it gives steady moisture in the air around the plants. Maybe misting is just a popular myth that needs to end.

Misting can also clean dust off leaves, which helps plants absorb more light. Even if humidity spikes are short, cleaner leaves might boost photosynthesis. So maybe misting isn't totally useless if done for cleaning instead of moisture.
