The desert botanical garden near Phoenix was overhyped in my opinion

I went to the Desert Botanical Garden last month and honestly I think the natural desert around it is way more interesting. They have all these curated paths but the real variety is just off the trail in the wild brush.

the real variety is just off the trail in the wild brush" - that's exactly what I noticed too. Did you actually walk off the trail and compare what you found there to the garden's displays? Curious if you saw species in the wild that the garden didn't even have tagged or labeled.

Yeah did you try going off trail by the wash areas to the east? Way more variety out there than the garden, and I found some cool barrel cacti they didn't have labeled at all.
