Corner block trick from an old timer in Toledo

I always fought with keeping corners plumb, used to redo them twice a job. A guy I was working next to showed me to set the corner block and run a string line from it instead of eyeballing each course. Saves me about 20 minutes every wall now, has anyone else tried this or do you still trust the level?

Did your string line ever get thrown off by wind or a bump when you were running long walls? That was always my issue with string lines for corner blocks. The trick I picked up instead was to set the corner block, then use a long straight edge, like a 6 foot level, laid flat against the face to check for plumb before I even pull a line. It catches the twist in the block that string lines miss. String lines are great for keeping the face flat, but they won't tell you if the block is leaning back a quarter inch at the top. I'd say use both, but trust the level for the plumb and the line for the plane.
