Debate: Should you always buy store brand beans for chili?

My friend Sarah swears store brand kidney beans taste exactly the same for $0.89 a can. But last time I used them my chili came out mushy and bland. Has anyone else noticed a real difference or is she right that it's all in my head?

Notice how pennies matter on beans but nobody questions paying extra for name brand ketchup or mustard.

Store brand beans are lottery tickets for chili.
