That 25 pound bag of rice I bought ended up costing me way more than I saved
I saw a huge bag of jasmine rice at the Asian market for $18 and thought I was being so smart. Saved like 30 cents a pound compared to the small bags. But I live alone in a tiny apartment with a weird pantry situation. After 4 months I found bugs in it. Had to throw out probably 15 pounds of rice. So I actually paid more per pound than if I just bought the small bags as I needed them. Anyone else have bulk buys backfire on them?

That bulk pricing trap is real if you don't calculate the hidden costs of storage and waste. Found out the hard way with a 50 pound bag of flour that went rancid before I could use half of it (tastes like cardboard, trust me). Better off paying the premium for small bags unless you're feeding a family or have a vacuum sealer for long term storage.

Hey @olivers28, I gotta push back just a little on the flour going rancid point. White flour actually doesn't go rancid like whole wheat flour does because the fat content is so low. The off taste you got was probably from moisture or bugs getting in, not actual rancidity. I've kept a 25 pound bag of all-purpose flour in a sealed bucket for over a year and it was totally fine. You're right that bulk buying without proper storage is a mess though. Did you have it in the original bag or did you move it to something airtight?
