Back when I was broke in Portland I had to pick between a hostel or camping. Took the tent.

Man that's rough, I feel you. It's such a raw deal when you're young and broke and have to make those calls. I always respect someone who just goes for it and camps instead of trying to fake it in a hostel they can't afford. Hope you at least had some good gear and didn't freeze your butt off. That kind of hustle builds character I think.

Nah, gotta push back on that. "Builds character" is just something people say to make being broke sound noble. Reality is you miss out on meeting people, networking, making connections that actually help you later. Camping in random spots isn't hustle, it's just surviving. You're too tired and cold to actually do anything useful with your time there.
