Everyone raves about staying in hostels but my worst travel week ever was in one

I tried a hostel in Barcelona for 5 nights to save cash. First night, someone stole my sneakers from under the bunk. Second night, a guy snored so loud I got 2 hours of sleep. Third day, the shared fridge had moldy food stinking up the whole room. By day 4, I paid extra for a cheap hotel just to get a solid night's rest. Has anyone else had a hostel trip go completely sideways?

Tbh Barcelona hostels are a total gamble. I had almost the exact same thing happen in a place near Las Ramblas, someone swiped my phone charger while I was sleeping, which is just annoying and petty. The snoring is the worst though, one guy in my room sounded like a dying lawnmower all night and I was ready to check myself into a nuthouse by morning. Shared fridges are always a biohazard, I saw a Tupperware of something green and fuzzy that I swear was growing legs. After that trip I swore off hostels completely, they just aren't worth the headache for the few bucks you save.
