My cousin did that last summer and said you can actually see more cool little canals on foot. That clerk gave you solid advice for a tight budget.

Yeah, walking is the only way to do it right. @johnthompson is spot on about finding the little canals. Those vaporetto lines just stick to the main routes. You miss all the quiet corners and real life happening in the alleys. Plus, getting lost is part of the fun there. Fifteen euros goes way further for a slice of pizza when you're not blowing it on a boat ticket.
