Got wrecked by a $9 airport sandwich in Reykjavik and now I pack my own food on every trip
Ngl I used to grab food at the gate every single time because it felt easier than planning ahead. Then on a layover in Reykjavik last March I paid $9 for one sad sandwich and $6 for a tiny water, and I just stood there doing the math on what that cost me for a 14 hour travel day. Now I hit a grocery store the night before and pack sandwiches, fruit, and an empty bottle for the fountain, which saves me around $30 every trip. Has anyone else gotten burned like that at an airport and switched up their routine?
The real trap is that airport prices mess with your sense of what normal food costs, so you end up overpaying for the rest of the trip too. Once you clock a $9 sandwich as a scam, you start side-eyeing every tourist restaurant and street cart for the same reason. Packing your own stuff basically resets your brain to what a meal should actually cost.
