Hostel kitchen cook-off showed me why booking direct wins every time

Tbh I used to think hostel booking sites were the same price, so I always used them for points. Then last month in Lisbon I compared the same bed on Hostelworld vs the hostel's own site. The direct booking was $6 cheaper per night and included free breakfast, which the third-party site didn't even mention. I booked 4 nights direct and saved $24 plus got a free towel rental. The hostel even let me pick my bunk ahead of time because I called them. Has anyone else noticed that direct booking almost always beats the aggregators when you add in the perks?
