I thought travel insurance was a scam until a hostel desk guy in Bangkok said one sentence to me
For 6 years I skipped travel insurance on every trip because I figured the odds were on my side and $80 a trip adds up. Last month I was checking into a hostel in Bangkok and the guy behind the desk asked if I had coverage, and when I said no he pointed at the clinic across the street and said a bad stomach bug there runs about $300 cash before they even see you. I got food poisoning two days later and paid $340 out of pocket for IV fluids and meds. Now I pay the $12 for a basic policy on every trip over a week, it's way less than one clinic visit. Does anyone have a cheap insurer they actually trust for longer trips, like 3 months or more?
