Just realized 'house sitting' travel hack backfired on me hard

Ngl, I thought staying in someone's house for free in Portland last month was genius. But the owner's cat got sick on day 3 and I spent $200 at the emergency vet. Then the fridge broke and I had to call a repair guy. Tbh, it ended up costing me more than a cheap motel would have. Has anyone else had a 'free' travel arrangement totally blow up on them?

...and I ended up paying more to watch someone else's cat than I would have for a hotel room.

Wait how much did you actually end up paying per day? I've seen some people charge $50 a night for cat sitting which is ABSURD for an animal that basically just sleeps and eats. Was this a situation where you had to clean up hairballs or give medications or something that added to the price? Cause if it was just a standard healthy cat that's a total RIP OFF.
