That week I slept in a hostel for $18 a night and it was actually great

Last month I was passing through Portland and found a hostel near the train station, not the fancy one downtown either. I paid $126 for a whole week, which is less than one night at any motel I checked. The best part was a guy from Sweden showed me how to cook a full dinner using only the free bread, hot sauce, and a microwave they had. Has anyone else had a hostel experience that beat a cheap hotel room by a mile?

Honestly, that Sweden guy sounds like a legend. The free bread and hot sauce dinner reminded me of something that happened to my buddy Ray in New Orleans. He booked a hostel for a long weekend and ended up in a room with a retired chef from Italy who took over the communal kitchen one night. Ray said the guy made this insane pasta dish using only stuff people had left in the fridge, like leftover olives and some weird cheese. He still talks about that meal more than any fancy restaurant he's ever been to. So yeah, hostels can absolutely beat a cheap hotel room when you get lucky with the people, no doubt.
