The $8 hostel breakfast that saved my Tokyo food budget

Honestly, I used to think paying extra for hostel breakfast was a total scam. Like, who wants cold eggs and sad toast when you can grab a 7-Eleven onigiri for a buck? But last month in Tokyo I stayed at this place near Asakusa and added the breakfast for 800 yen. Turns out they had miso soup, rice, pickles, and a make-your-own omelet station. I ate like a king before heading out and then only needed one cheap ramen stop for the whole day. That meant I saved like 2000 yen a day on snacks and random convenience runs. Now I always check if the hostel breakfast has actual Japanese staples before booking. Has anyone else found a hostel meal that ended up being the best deal of their trip?
