Had a moment at Goodwill that changed how I trim my book cloth

Last month I was digging through a bin at the Goodwill near my house in Portland and found this old sewing book from the 1950s. The binding was wrecked but the cloth on the spine was cut super clean with a razor blade. I always use scissors or a rotary cutter and get frayed edges on my book cloth. I tried copying that razor approach on my next project, a set of 3 journals for my sister, and it cut way sharper and cleaner. Has anyone else used a simple utility knife for book cloth instead of fancy tools?

Switched to a cheap $10 mud pan and actually like it more than my $50 one

I always thought spending more meant better results but after 3 jobs with the cheap pan I noticed it's lighter and cleans up faster, anyone else find cheaper gear works better sometimes?

Vent: People keep calling VPNs the same as encrypted messaging

I hear it all the time on here. A VPN hides your IP but your messages are plain text unless you use Signal or something. My buddy in Austin lost a freelance gig because a client thought a VPN meant end to end encryption.

Had a convo with a thru-hiker who said trail angels are overrated

Met this guy at a campsite near Ashland who said he never takes food from trail angels because it creates a crutch. I thought he was crazy but he pointed out how many hikers just rely on handouts instead of learning to resupply properly. Has anyone else seen hikers get too dependent on town support?

Comparing ChatGPT vs Claude for debugging my Python code was eye opening

I spent 2 hours trying to fix a stupid loop error in my data scraper script last night. I fed the same broken code to both and Claude spotted the missing indentation in like 10 seconds flat. Has anyone else noticed one AI is way better at certain coding tasks than others?

Watched Naruto in Japanese vs English dub and it was like two different shows

I saw a before and after difference when I rewatched the Chunin Exams arc in Japanese after seeing it dubbed for years. The pacing felt faster and characters like Orochimaru had way more menace, you know? Just wondering if anyone else noticed how much the voice direction changes the whole vibe.

Hit 100 nights in my hammock setup last season - here's what surprised me

I finally hit 100 nights sleeping in my hammock instead of a tent over the course of last summer and fall. What got me was how much warmer I stayed compared to a ground tent, even with just a basic underquilt from OneTigris. I finally tried selling my house without a realtor

Listed my bungalow in Mill Woods on one of those flat fee sites back in March. Thought I'd save the 5% commission easy. First showing was a couple who wanted to negotiate down to 50k under asking and then ghosted me. Ended up spending way more time answering emails and dealing with tire kickers than I expected. Has anyone else tried going FSBO in Edmonton and actually had it work out?

Hot water tank failed in my rental house on a Sunday

Was showing a duplex I just bought near Whyte Ave to a potential tenant when the hot water tank gave out. Leaked all over the basement floor, what a mess. Had to call an emergency plumber on a Sunday, cost me $450 just for the service call. Anyone else deal with an unexpected home repair right when you're trying to close a deal?

Vent: The way we talk about 'product-led growth' now is totally different from two years ago

I was looking back at some old notes from a founder meet-up in Austin, maybe from early 2022... and the whole vibe around PLG was just 'make a great free tier and they will come.' It was this magic bullet idea. Now, after trying to build our own sales pipeline, I see the before-and-after difference. The 'after' is that PLG isn't a replacement for sales anymore, it's just the top of the funnel. The cause was watching our free users hit a wall. They loved the tool but had zero idea how to scale it for their team of 50 people. We had to build a whole 'hand-off' system after someone used the product for 30 days, where a real person would reach out. It's not as clean as the old story, but it actually works. Has anyone else had to build a bridge between their self-serve sign-up and their enterprise sales team?
